Let me start with a topic that is very dear to my heart, that of having nice photos of yourself and your loved ones, both as a way of capturing your personal history in your life but also to leave for family and friends when you are no longer here. It is for this reason that our family has yearly photo shoots (this is nothing too fancy, we just all come together to have portraits taken in a very dear friend’s photographic studio. We don’t all wear denim and white tees or anything like that, we wear our favourite clothes at that time and it only takes about 30 minutes all up to be ‘shot.’) I love being able to look back on our photos and remember every hairstyle and fashion trend of the time.
I have always loved photography and taking photos of other people but the importance of me actually getting into a photo became all too real when my mother-in-law passed unexpectedly and when we went looking for photos of her, we ended up finding a lot of photos that she took. So we have resolved to ‘get in the photo’ more both when we travel and just in everyday life.
So when we were finalising our plans to travel to Italy, I really wanted a way of being able to capture good quality images of us without the risk of handing over our phone or camera to a stranger and hoping they did not flee with it!
So after much research, we found Flytographer and reviewed the available photographers in Rome. The gallery of each photographer really gives you an idea of their style and personality to ensure you are a match for the photos and experience you are seeking. From here, you enter your preferred date/s and time/s with your preferred photographer and they get back to you to lock in a time and date. Just a word of warning if you are not a morning person, but our shoot in Rome was at 6:30am which meant a wake up time of 5:30am to do hair and makeup, so have a look at what time sunrise may mean for your location. But I can also say that this early wake up was absolutely worth it as there were barely a handful of people around at this time and don’t think a single one of them made it into any of our photos – which is no mean feat in Rome!

There are many locations within Rome that you are able to select for your Flytographer shoot. For us, we selected the Colosseum and Roman Forum as these are distinctly Italian. Also, there are some places in Rome that are never not busy, such as the Trevi Fountain, so the experience will be significantly different and way more ‘people-y’. Also, the Colosseum was more in the neighbourhood of where we were staying, so it removed the need for an early morning taxi or metro to the shoot!

The cost of a Flytographer shoot does vary, depending on the photographer and the duration of your shoot. My theory on this is to make the financial investment in selecting a photographer and location that you will love. After all, the quality of the images you will receive from your Flytographer shoot will be printed and hung in your home, such is the quality and beauty of them! The thing I love about the photos we received is that it really captures who we are – we are normal, forty something mum and dad. We are not influencers or models, just normal people who wanted to come back from our trip to Italy with some souvenirs, bellies full of pizza and gelato, and some photos to serve as memories of our time here. We do have some great (and not so great) selfies of our time – as not every day can be a photo shoot – but it was so wonderful to return home and receive the email advising our photos were ready to view and download. It allows the memories of our time in Italy to live on long after we have returned home.

So if I have not already convinced you, let me give you 5 reasons why you should consider using Flytographer:
1) Having photos of YOU at your holiday destination are the perfect way to remember your trip! Better than magnets, key-rings, or t-shirts! You can even use their services for proposals!
2) Flytographer have photographers all across the world, meaning your next holiday destination likely has a Flytographer photographer available.
3) There is an application process to become a photographer on Flytographer meaning you get access to a local photographer, who is awesome at what they do, with their services backed by Flytographer – This is a lot safer than finding someone on a social media or other online marketplace!
4) Having your photos taken does not hurt a bit and captures your personal history!
5) It is fun – we had a blast! Our photographer Roberta was a Rome local who was able to share interesting insights into the city and area of our shoot. She was easy to talk to and we felt super relaxed, which shows in our photos!
