Another bright and early start to the day! We braved Los Angeles morning traffic to get out of town and get to the Sequoia National Park. We had seen pictures of gigantic redwood trees and figured we would track them down in the park. The bonus was that as it was National Park’s Week, entry into the park (normally $30US) was free! Winning!
What we didn’t realise was that these gigantic trees were in fact at the top of the snow-capped mountains, about 7000 ft elevation. So bizarre, 4 foot of snow heaped up, and we were walking around in tshirts. The General Sherman tree, down a small trail from the carpark, is the world’s largest tree based on volume. The top of it is dead so it does not grow taller, but it still gains volume at the rate of one average sized sequoia tree each year! We took heaps of pics, but no matter what we did, we could not really accurately capture just how gigantic the General Sherman tree was!
We then snaked our way back down the mountain and stopped for dinner in Fresno. We did not have accommodation booked for tonight which gave us the flexibility to end up wherever we needed to be. So over dinner we reviewed out maps and calculated travel time to Monterey. It was not too far and would give us a good run into San Francisco tomorrow.
