Memphis to Oklahoma

Bidding farewell to Memphis, we continued west to Oklahoma.
Yes, there is a song about that. Yes, it was playing in my head for much of the drive. Ooooooooklahoma, where the sun comes sweeping down the planes…anywho…when we arrived in town, we first hit up a Sonic Burger. It had been talked up by our mate, Jim Ross, so we had to give it a go. This is not an ‘eat in’ restaurant as such, you order through the board to your left and then the order is bought out (sometimes by people on skates, but not on this occasion) and you eat it in your car.
Following this, we hit the site of the Oklahoma City Bombing. If there is one thing that America does well, it is a monument. The site is so serene and the rows of empty chairs on the grass symbolise each victim and the floor they were located on within the building. A massive reflection pool is in the centre and the time that the city lost its innocence is etched into a massive arch at one of the entrances to the memorial. There is also a tree to pay homage to the rescuers and to thank all of those who assisted on the day. Terrible that such a memorial has to exist, but a beautiful way to honour those who lost their lives.
We were very fortunate in our travels that we were able to get tickets to Kobe Bryant’s final away game in the NBA when the Lakers V the Thunder. The Chesapeake Energy Arena was pretty impressive and the seats we got were awesome. The last time I had seen a basketball game was at the Newcastle Basketball Stadium and Fat Elvis was roaming the sidelines with a big “D” and a section of picket fence… but I knew the general gist of what each team was trying to do. What I was amazed at was how busy the court was and how quickly people got on and off the court during time outs and quarter and half time. There were competitions and presentations and bouncing ball acts.
