Oklahoma to Monument Valley

Massive day of driving today, but it was necessary due to us locking this accommodation in before we got the tickets to the basketball in Oklahoma for the Monday night. Long drive, but a very pretty one. Covered so much ground and saw the countryside change from lush and green to bare and very red.

Before there was too much change in scenery though, we passed through Amarillo and went searching for the Cadillac Ranch. It was a fun place to visit, but I am way too straight 180 to take a can of spray paint and even when the biker man offered his left over cans to us to use, I could not bring myself to spray paint the old cars!

Driving into Monument Valley, you are able to glimpse some of the commonly recognisable rock formations for many tens of miles away. Then, as you turn a corner, you are taken away from them again and you do not gain sight for many more tens of miles.
The mountains look just like paintings. It is like you are in a weird, virtual world. The rock formations look so perfect and the colours so magical that your brain is tricked into thinking they are a polished version of reality.
The very best part about our visit to Monument Valley was the accommodation we had booked. The Monument Valley Tipi Village overlooks Monument Valley and has a number of tipis, a log cabin and even camping facilities. For the view and the experience of being here, the price is so minimal. We ate pizza on our front door step and watched the shadows grow long and the valley descend into darkness. Our fire pit warmed us outside and we were able to hire a heater for the inside of the tipi. A tipi, a million-dollar view AND electricity! This place really is my kind of camping!
