Sydney to Dallas

Hi there! Ooopps, I mean, G’day Mate!

We have arrived in the land of opportunity and deep fried
foods following our epic 15 hour flight. While not entirely enjoyable, it was
good as far as flights go. I ended up with about 8 hours of broken sleep, but
this is far greater than my 45 mins last time we travelled to the USA! Pete was
so kind as to point out that I was in a far better mood this time than
last.
  Thanks Pete!

So we hopped off our flight, collected the motor vehicle we
are hiring and hit the road. That in itself was a weird process. We sorted out
the paperwork for the car, then basically we got to walk out to a ginormous car
park with different sections (being for sizes of cars) and we got to go pick
out the rental car we wanted. There were 5 to choose from and while I
originally leapt at the prospect of hitting the roads in another Yaris, we
settled on a Hyundai Accent which is equivalent to an I20 here. I love it!
Small enough to not crash into stuff but big enough to fit all suitcases in the
boot. Anywho! I jumped at the opportunity to drive the car first but soon
regretted it. I was absolutely freaking out about the size of the roads we
ended up on but we ended up reaching our first destination which was Dealey
Plaza. Here and around here was the site that JFK was shot. There is even a
large, white X on the road to mark the exact spot on the road where he was
shot. There were some conspiracy theorists set up with their paperwork and
posters, talking to anyone who walked past.

After this, we hit down town Dallas. We were looking for
somewhere to eat but ended up just finding a heap of either historic, or 80s,
or ultra modern buildings of various sizes, many of which in various stages of
repair or renovation. For such a big city, there were not too many people
around, but we figured it probably had something to do with it being Easter
Monday.

Feeling a tad hungry and needing to hit the road, we headed
to Walmart for some travel supplies and then jumped into Denny’s for a bite to
eat.
Once fed, we jumped on the highway en route to New Orleans.
We ended up near Longview at a place called Kilgore. We stopped at the Days Inn
Kilgore for the night. Pete engaged in some awkward small talk with the man at
the counter as we checked in, but before too long we were set for the night. We
fell asleep easily enough but were both wide awake at 2am. Fortunately this
made it a good time for us to call back home and have a quick chat to the kids.
It was so great to hear their voices.
